Who is eligible for Telehealth?

All Medicare-eligible Australians can receive telehealth services if they have an established clinical relationship with our clinics. An established relationship means an Amtan GP:

  • has provided at least one face-to-face service to the patient in the 12 months preceding the telehealth attendance;
    or
  • is located at a medical practice where the patient has had at least one face-to-face service arranged by that
    practice in the 12 months preceding the telehealth attendance (including services performed by another doctor
    located at the practice, or a service performed by another health professional located at the practice, such as a
    practice nurse or Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander health worker); or
  • is a participant in the Approved Medical Deputising Service program, and the Approved Medical Deputising
    Service provider employing the medical practitioner has a formal agreement with a medical practice that has
    provided at least one face-to-face service to the patient in the 12 months preceding the telehealth attendance.

The existing relationship requirement does not apply to:

  • children under the age of 12 months;
  • people who are homeless;
  • patients living in a COVID-19 impacted area**;
  • patients receiving an urgent after-hours (unsociable hours) service; or
  • Medicare Benefits Schedule
  • patients of medical practitioners at an Aboriginal Medical Service or an Aboriginal Community Controlled Health
    Service.

AND (from 1 July 2021) patients accessing specific MBS items for:

  • bloodborne viruses, sexual or reproductive health consultations (new items); and pregnancy counselling services (under MBS Group A40).

**Note: A COVID-19 impacted area is one where a person’s movement is restricted by a State or Territory public health
requirement that applies to the person’s location. This includes patients subject to quarantine, and other restrictions
intended to support infection control.

New patients of the practice and regular patients who have not attended the practice face to face in the preceding
12 months may only claim a face-to-face attendance. Subsequent services may be provided by telehealth, if safe and
clinically appropriate to do so.

Note: A patient’s participation in a previous telehealth consultation does not constitute a face-to-face service for the
purposes of these items.

Our team will confirm that patients have received an eligible face-to-face attendance in the preceding
12 months, or meet one or more of the relevant exemption criteria for the service, prior to providing a telehealth
attendance.

If we are unable to confirm the established relationship requirement, your appointment may not be eligible for bulk billing.

A.   USE OUR TELEHEALTH FACILITY INSTEAD BY CALLING 13004AMTAN (1300426826)
i.  Call 13004AMTAN (1300426826) BEFORE visiting our clinics if you have travelled or experience any flu-like symptoms.
ii.  We will be asking a few extra questions to isolate patients ‘at risk for COVID-19’. This allows us to better support and enables doctors to provide the care and attention needed while reducing the risk of casual contact.
iii.  Be mindful and respectful of the staff, nurses and doctors during this time of crisis in the healthcare industry.
iv.  Call in advance for your scheduled appointment to know of any possible delays.

2. TELEHEALTH CONSULTATION (BULK BILLED)

The World Health Organisation (WHO) has declared COVID-19 a pandemic. Prime Minister Scott Morrison has announced a number of healthcare measures to protect Australians from COVID-19. For people in home isolation or quarantine, as a result of coronavirus, to receive health consultations via the phone or video such as Phone or Skype.

This is a massive action undertaken by Amtan Medical Centres as it goes a long way to ensure the sustainability of our clinic’s service long term and in the interest of our staff and doctors as well. Such measures help us too, to reduce our vulnerability and risk during such a crisis in the health industry.

*The Telehealth service will be bulk-billed at no cost to eligible patients and will be available from Friday 13 March.

*A private Telehealth fee applies for Non-Medicare eligible patients.
